No one has to wait for spring...
After the winter months of long nights and short days, the cold, frost, wafts of mist and slippery roads, many people in our latitudes long for the first signs of spring. They long to take off their winter coats, sweaters and heavy shoes, turn down heaters, open windows and move out into street cafes, gardens, forests and fields. Longing for a new beginning and breakup under the first rays of the spring sun! The spring sun with its clear, glistening light penetrates into all corners, awakens all nature including our vital spirits and animates us to spring-clean our house, garden, streets and parks. Who would not understand this spring joy! And even if this is so, there is still a spring of a different nature. There is a spring for which nothing and nobody has to wait, which is independent of any season. This kind of spring arises automatically, unnoticed, naturally and unconcerned about space and time from the way we practice Zen meditation, our sitting practice of "just sitting". The prerequisite is that we have the perseverance to regularly integrate "simply sitting" into our everyday life! With this spring it is now the other way round: we don't have to wait for him, but he is waiting for us. At any time. He is waiting for us, or rather for our courage to look him in the eye. This spring is able to "cleanse" our existence. It illuminates life in the smallest corners, clears the mind and budges new energy. The warming, radiant spring sun is for me a symbol of the spring that is conditioned by the seasons. The counterpart regarding the spring of the other kind is for me the clarifying and illuminating glow of the quiet, wild breakup on the meditation cushion: I call it Spring Moon. |
