Please join us for any part of our practice. In addition to zazen (sitting) and kinhin (walking), we participate in services (bowing and chanting), soji (temple cleaning), discussion groups, dharma talks baika (hymn-singing with handbells) and having informal tea together.
First-time visitors are welcome. Please see our New to Sanshin? page for information about resources for getting started in practice. There is no charge for participation in weekly practice events, although donations in support of the teachings and community are gratefully received. Please note that Monday morning zazen is not held if there have been activities on both the previous Saturday and Sunday (retreats, ceremonies, etc,) During sesshins and retreats: We take the day before and the morning after a sesshin or retreat as time off, and no regular activities are held. On the day a sesshin or retreat is to start, there is no morning zazen, but temple cleaning does take place at 9 am. On Sundays during a sesshin or retreat there is no lecture or teatime. Those not participating fully in the sesshin or retreat are still welcome to drop in for zazen on Sundays between 7 am and noon. Please see the retreat or sesshin schedule for exact activity times. |
Of course, it's good to sit enthusiastically, but your enthusiasm should not be for competition with others. Then shall we honestly follow our desires? Shall we sit only when we want to sit, and avoid sitting when we don't want to? This is also a mistake. It is good to sit with other people because we have scheduled zazen, even if we don't want to sit on that day. This is worthy zazen. Even if we sit unwillingly or we sit to keep others company, zazen is zazen when we actually sit. It is solely dependent upon your attitude toward practice at the moment.
