For information about the history and tradition of ango in the Soto Zen training temple, please go here. For information about residential practice and to apply, please go here.
In alignment with the three areas of the Eighfold Path -- prajna (wisdom), sila (ethics) and samadhi (concentration), each of the three months of the ango includes a practice event designed to provide the chance to focus on one of these elements. The May genzo-e is an opportunity for deep study of Dogen's teachings (wisdom). During the June sesshin, we put aside all other activities to intensify our practice of zazen (concentration). The July precepts retreat allows for studying and receiving the precepts (ethics). Throughout the three months, the regular daily and weekly practice schedule goes on as usual. Okumura Roshi appoints one of his novices to serve as shuso, or head practitioner, for the term of the ango as an opportunity for leadership development in his or her training as clergy. The shuso gives Sunday dharma talks, officiates at the monthly World Peace ceremony, serves as the ino for the monthly Ryaku Fusatsu, may develop and lead a one-day workshop, and takes on other kinds of practice leadership throughout the ango. In June, Sanshin holds a shuso hossen, a ceremony that allows the shuso to demonstrate dharma mastery by answering questions from the sangha. There is no fee for participating in the ango as a whole, though individual practice events do require registration and payment. It is possible to stay at Sanshin for the duration of the ango in order to participate in the practice. Please go here for information about residential practice and to apply. |
